Answering Your Common Questions
There’s a lot of conflicting information about growing microgreens.
We’re here to make it easier and more rewarding for you!
-
Use organic potting soil commonly available at most stores.
Moisten the soil until a handful holds together when squeezed, but no water comes out. Make sure its damp, not soggy!
-
You’ll need two containers. Almost any size will work, but at least one must have holes in the bottom for drainage and bottom watering. If both have holes, use a shallow baking pan, pie plate, or similar tray underneath.
-
Get a Spray Bottle for misting seeds in the beginning of the process. This provides the moisture needed to start germination. From then on BOTTOM WATER ONLY.
-
Spread your microgreen seeds fairly heavily and as evenly as possible.
You want good coverage, but you should still be able to see soil between the seeds.
-
Keep under weight for 3 Days. Place the empty second container on top of the seeds and add some weight. Remember the can of soup from our Grow Like A Pro video?
This encourages the roots to grow deep!
Please see #10 for Sunflower Microgreens.
-
Remove the weight after day 3. If the soil looks a little dry spray with a bit of water then cover (unweighted) for another day. No sunlight yet! This encourages them to stretch upward looking for light.
After the black-out period, once exposed to light, they’ll stand up and begin turning green over the next two days.
-
After black-out, place them in a sunny location such as a windowsill. If using a grow light, keep it about 13 inches or more above the container and use a timer for 15 hours of light per day. Ideal but not necessary.
Remember BOTTOM WATER ONLY! Add about ¼ inch of water to the bottom tray or dish. Water daily as needed but not too much!
If water remains from the previous day, or it looks very wet, don’t add more until the next day. Over-watering is a common mistake!
-
Most varieties are ready to cut about 6–9 days after being exposed to light. Cut just above the soil with clean kitchen scissors or a super sharp knife. Dispose of the remaining soil and roots... don’t reuse it.
-
Keep cut microgreens dry. Place a dry paper towel underneath them and store them in a sealed container in the refrigerator.
-
Unlike most microgreen seeds they need more dampness while under weight. Take the weight off and mist DAILY. Increase the weighted period to 4 days instead of 3. Then one day of blackout like normal!
-
if you see it, It's usually NOT mold! UNLESS it's too wet, or too wet and warm. Here's how to tell the difference between micro root hairs and mold:
Mist LIGHTLY with water. If it seems to disappear it is micro root hairs. Perfectly normal. If it stays white and web looking, it probably is mold, dump it all in the trash wash your containers well and start again! This time USE LESS WATER in your soil in the beginning and do not over water! Sometime it's a little learning process!
